Starting his Map-making Career

Thompson’s leg and eyes eventually recovered enough for him to once again travel the fur routes. Now, however, he was on a mission. Turnor had recommended that Thompson be made surveyor to the HBC. In 1790, at age twenty, Thompson began his new career by each day plotting his position as he travelled along the unmapped fur trading trails. He was surveying to make the first map of the Muskrat Country between Reindeer Lake and Hudson Bay.

But the company kept Thompson travelling the same old routes for the next five years, and the adventuresome surveyor became bored and frustrated with his repetitive routine. He wanted to explore and map new country.
